A bill by Sen. Benjamin Cardin, D-Md., would let newspapers choose a tax-exempt status similar to public broadcasting stations.
The Maryland senator said Tuesday that papers opting for this choice would not be allowed to make political endorsements. However, they would be free to report on all issues, including political campaigns.
Advertising and subscription revenue would be tax-exempt and contributions to support coverage could be tax deductible.

It's not news that print journalism is suffering like other industries throughout the world, and I guess this is a "nice idea". But I'm wondering just how much this would actually help the bottom line. And why just for newspapers?

Dangerous times?

Steelmakers generally make worker safety a high priority, so this question is offered with an appropriate sensitivity to the current situation: What is going on in 2008? We're only 12 weeks into this year, and already there are eight work-related fatal accidents at U.S. steel mills. If anyone has an opinion, or better, an insight, it would be welcome.

Welcome to the MP&P forums

For over 40 years, Metal Producing & Processing has aimed to respond to the interests and concerns of the widest number of operators, managers, executives, and researchers in what is now known as the metals "supply chain." SIC 33 - from which we drew our original title - no longer applies to the primary metals industry (iron and steel, aluminum, copper, and other nonferrous industrial metals), but the manufacturers remain as vital and as vibrant as ever.

Our focus always has been operations, so let that be your focus, too.
